Residential Security Tips
Here are a few safety and security tips from the National Crime Prevention Safety Council to use to keep your family safe and thieves away.
· Lock your doors and windows – 60% of burglaries show no sign of forced entry.
· Trim your hedges and bushes so that you do not give a thief a place to hide.
· Replace any burned out bulbs on outside lighting.
· In your vehicle – never leave a GPS, laptop, car phones, etc visible in your vehicle. Lock them in the trunk or take them inside.
· Wait until trash day to set out television, computer, or other expensive gift boxes at the curb. These signal thieves that you have valuable items in your home.
· Use automatic timers to turn on lights, radio, and/or television when you are not home. Have the lights on timers that imitate your daily activities. Have bedroom and kitchen lights come on in the morning. Have den, a television or a radio, and kitchen lights on throughout the day and into the evening. Have bathroom and bedroom lights come on at bedtime.
· Have a trusted neighbor to watch your house while you are away. If you do not stop the mail and newspaper have them pick it up each day. Have them park a car in your driveway while you are away. Keep your house “looking lived in.”
· Use the FREE L.C.S.D. Property Check Program. Call the Front Desk at 785-8230 Ext. 6 and fill out a Property Check request. A Lexington County Sheriff’s Deputy will check your house while you are away.
· Carry your cash separately from your credit cards and driver license.
· Be alert to suspicious activity. Report anything that seems unusual or suspicious to the Sheriff’s Department immediately to Dispatch at 785-8230 extension 6.
